Past Board of Directors Chairman Wendell Lynch
Past Board of Directors Chairman

Wendell Lynch is a native of Hopkinsville and a graduate of Hopkinsville High School. He received B.S. from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma and returned to Hopkinsville in 1973 to work as a teller at First City Bank and Trust Company.

Currently, Lynch serves as city executive and local market leader for BB&T. As Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in 2007-08, Lynch has enjoyed seeing the community come together and earnestly implement the various components of the Community Vision Plan. Seeing how hundreds of people have become engaged and are working together to improve our education system and workforce through the recent Education Summit is a particular source of pride for him.

But, he's equally excited about seeing the long-term results of many other initiatives in which volunteers are diligently working toward like beautification, downtown revitalization, the Study Circles process and the roll-out of a new community brand.

In addition to his leadership role with the Chamber of Commerce, Lynch serves as a member of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Economic Development Council, the Community Vision Plan Steering Committee, the Chamber's Minority Economic Development Committee, the Board of the Local Development Corporation and The Pioneers, Inc. He had also served on the Jennie Stewart Medical Center Trustee Board, the Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority Board, the Murray State University Board of Regents and chaired the 2001 United Way Campaign.

Past Board of Directors Chairman Mack Major
Past Board of Directors Chairman

Born and raised in Hopkinsville, Mack Major felt the need to give something back to the community that had been so good to him. After graduating from Christian County High School, he majored in hospital administration at the University of Kentucky, and then received an M.B.A. at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

Major returned home to Hopkinsville in 1992 and started a career with Higgins Insurance, where he is now a partner, and works with employee benefit programs. During his Chamber presidency in 2002-03, Major's leadership – along with lots of community support – transitioned the Chamber office from downtown to its present location on Fort Campbell Blvd. The decision was not without controversy, as some leaders preferred to keep the Chamber downtown. Yet, the reality of south bound growth and the need for better access kept him certain that the decision was the long-term best interest of both the Chamber and its members.

Another initiative borne during his tenure was the Community Foundation of Christian, Trigg and Todd counties. While the Chamber managed foundation for Chamber efforts, the board expressed the need to broaden the scope and put in place a true community foundation. Eventually, those ideas came to fruition and today Mack serves as chairman of that foundation board.

Major and wife Lynn they have one son, Mack Jr. He enjoys golf, tennis, sporting event and spending time with family. Thank you, Mack Major, for making your mark on Hopkinsville-Christian County!

Past Board of Directors Chairman Bob Cope
Past Board of Directors Chairman

Bob Cope’s service as Chamber president in 2004-05 began with some challenges, not the least of which was filling several key vacancies within the organization.

Search committees were formed to fill the positions of President/CEO, Director of Military Affairs, Coordinator of Workforce Excellence and Director of Minority Economic Development. Within a few months, all were filled and a Director of Membership and Marketing was also hired.

The year saw a commitment by Governor Fletcher to provide the final funding necessary to pay off the debt on the James E. Bruce Convention Center and funding commitments to continue the extension of the Breathitt Parkway to I-24. The City Council passed a Residential Enterprise Zone, with a commitment to have a similar plan for an inner city REZ, and the Chamber formed a Marketing Committee. Needless to say, it was an active year, and one that laid critical groundwork for positive outcomes over the next several years.

Currently, Mr. Cope serves as public works director/city engineer for the City of Hopkinsville and has also worked as community president at U.S. Bank and with Howard K. Bell Consulting Engineers. He is a member of First United Methodist Church and serves on the boards of the Hopkinsville Community College Foundation and Rotary Club. Mr. Sisk is committed as ever to seeing the Vision Plan goals achieved and serves as chairman of the Plan’s oversight committee.

Chair, Community Enhancement Committee Scott Hancock
Chair, Community Enhancement Committee

Scott Hancock of Planters Bank leads the Community Enhancement Committee, as well as the Leadership Hopkinsville Board.

The Community Enhancement Committee's work represents some of the most visible efforts of the Chamber.

The committee established the Caught With Curb Appeal award to encourage businesses to focus on curb appeal. Each month, a winner is chosen, and they get radio and newspaper coverage to promote their business.

In addition, the committee has been instrumental in establishing a Landscape Ordinance which lays the groundwork for future commercial development to have more green space and plantings.

The Committee recently secured a grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to add landscaping at the new interchange at 41A and Parkway Extension. Future plans include landscaping at Exit 86 of Interstate 24. As well, a huge amount of work has gone into the Master Enhancement Plan which includes uniform welcome and directional signage, as well as beautification at all of the key points of entry, main intersections, and key attractions in Christian County.

In 2009-10, Scott will also chair Leadership Hopkinsville Board. The program essentially functions without any dedicated staff, so progress with the Leadership rests firmly on the shoulders of the chair of this board.

Both the Youth Leadership and the Adult Leadership classes experienced record interest, and, as a result, a record number of people were admitted to both programs. Any challenges associated with the larger groups were immediately accounted for, and both groups are having very positive experiences.

Thanks, Scott, for your leadership and for making your mark on Hopkinsville-Christian County.

Past Chair, Retail Development Calvin Givens
Past Chair, Retail Development

Calvin Givens has served as chair of the Retail Development Committee since July 2005.

There are two facets to the Retail Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. On the one hand, it is extremely important to support the retailers that have already made the investment into the Christian County Community. On the other hand, developing the retail market in Christian County is also important for quality of life.

Under his leadership, a number of accomplishments have been noted. First of all, two major “shop local” campaigns have been held since Calvin began chairing the committee. Secondly, a concerted effort has been made to expand the Chamber Gift Certificate program to drive sales through the doors of Chamber member businesses.

The Committee also re-established the Quality Service Award to recognize Chamber members with extraordinary customer service. It’s a great way positively reinforce customer service as well as promote businesses for going that extra step to serve their customers.

Plans are underway, right now, to create Customer Service Task Teams to provide customer service training, on-site, upon request by Chamber members. The training will be delivered by Chamber members for Chamber members.

On the other side of the issue is developing new retail options for our citizens. The new Small Business and Retail page of our website is being developed now to support the growth and recruitment of those small businesses. In addition, community profile sheets were developed to promote the various retail districts in Hopkinsville to potential retailers.

All of this has happened under Calvin’s leadership. Thanks, Calvin, for all of your hard work!
